Introduction

The pulse of South Africa proudly holds within it a company, which embodies the African spirit of UBUNTU.

We are manufacturers and suppliers of quality FBS, FBA and NFP Claybricks and supply enough bricks consistently to build any project, big or small such as: houses, shopping centres, industrial projects, office blocks and housing projects and many more.

Our History

The story of  West End Claybrick is stuff motivational books are made of. West End Claybrick (Pty) Ltd has been manufacturing Clay bricks for more than 30 years and has supplied quality building bricks to hundreds of thousands of homeowners, contractors, builders, developers and architects.

West End Claybrick was during 1991 known as West End Brickworks and in debt for millions when previous owner, Mr Hennie du Preez bought the company in 1998 and changed its name.  In less than 6 (six) years the company has grown its assets ten-fold and its turnover has likewise taken a quantum leap to 9 (nine) figures.

This on-going success has converted West End Claybrick to a public company and is listed in partnership with the Buildworks Group on the Alt-X (JSE) since 2009.

We believe that stable infrastructures, motivated and well trained employees, a highly professional team of representatives and a strong management team with the necessary expertise is crucial for a successful, credible business and to stay ahead of the market at all times.

Our Products

West End Claybrick takes pride in being able to offer the best quality FBS, FBA and NFP clay bricks to the market.

Our products are available in 4 (four) main colours (with many sub-colours) presented in a Travertine finish.  The brick range has an essentially Yellow background with an iron-spot speckle, which makes for aesthetically pleasing results in completed projects.

An independent laboratory, Soilcon CC, is responsible for the regular sampling and testing of our bricks in accordance to the SANS (SABS) 227:2002 requirements.  We are proud to announce that our products not only pass the tests, but outstrip the Minimum requirements by some considerable margin.

Our Production

A hands-on approach has been instrumental in building West End Claybrick into a success story.  Today the company adopts a cradle-to-grave approach. West End Claybrick mine and transport their own raw materials, produces the products, as well as take the responsibility for the selling and transporting of the bricks.

Clay being the major ingredient in the brick manufacturing process is mined at a quarry owned by the company and situated about 4km from the plant.  Road trucks and trailers transport the clay to the production site.

The fleet of road trucks and trailers transport the raw materials required in the brick making process namely sand, coal and fine powdered coal known as 'duff'.  Coal and duff are trucked in from the Witbank coalfields.  Duff, clay and sand are meticulously blended at the production plant.  The blended mixture is fed through a conveyer belt system until it emerges from the extruder, which cuts the continuous brick sausage into bricks.

The 'green bricks' as they are referred to, are packed to dry outside in the sun for six weeks.  Once dried, the bricks are fired in clamp kilns.  Each kiln holds ±1,86 million bricks and two kilns are processed at any one time.  While one is in the process of being packed ready for firing, another will be fired, a third will be cooling down and the fourth would be in the process of being unpacked and sorted ready for sale.

The kilns burn for 16 to 19 days, including the time required for cooling.  At the height of the firing process the temperatures soar to about 1200 degrees Celsius and the coolest area is about 950 degrees Celsius.  Darker bricks are made in the hottest section and up to six or seven colour variations can be found in each kiln.

The factory produces more than 22,000 bricks per hour or ±1,86 million bricks per week.  Of this amount 1,76 million bricks are saleable.  Of the bricks at least 90% are Face Bricks Aesthetics (FBA) products and 10% or less are Non Face Plaster (NFP) or stock bricks.  Wastage is kept to single figures (±5) and are used for rehabilitation or sold as cobbles.
